Bhubaneswar: At the groundbreaking ceremony of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted India’s evolution from a global IT services powerhouse to a nation increasingly focused on electronics manufacturing.
He noted that the foundation laid in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, the NCR region, and Mumbai helped establish India as a trusted IT services partner worldwide.
However, he pointed out that earlier growth lacked a strong manufacturing base, which is critical for building a complete technology ecosystem. This gap, he said, has been addressed over the past decade, particularly through the Make in India programme launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vaishnaw emphasised that India has transitioned from minimal electronics manufacturing to becoming a major producer, with mobile phones now emerging as one of the country’s top export items. He underscored that combining software expertise with hardware manufacturing is essential for long-term technological leadership.
The AI Hub initiative is expected to further strengthen India’s capabilities in emerging technologies, reinforcing its position in the global digital and innovation landscape.
