Odisha Notifies TUW Policy 2026 to Boost Water Reuse and Sustainability

Bhubaneswar: The Government of Odisha has officially notified the Treated Used Water Policy 2026, marking a major step toward sustainable water management and circular economy practices.

The policy sets ambitious targets, including achieving 100% treatment of used water across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) by 2030. It also outlines a phased reuse roadmap, aiming for 20% reuse by 2030 and scaling up to 50% by 2036.

Under the framework, treated wastewater will be utilised across multiple sectors such as municipal services, industries, and agriculture. The objective is to reduce dependence on freshwater resources and address increasing water stress driven by rapid urbanisation.

Officials stated that the policy aligns with global sustainability goals and is expected to drive investments in wastewater treatment infrastructure, promote advanced technologies, and encourage public-private partnerships in the sector.

Experts have welcomed the move, noting that effective implementation could position Odisha as a leader in wastewater recycling in India. The government is also expected to introduce awareness campaigns and regulatory mechanisms to ensure compliance and wider adoption.

The initiative represents a strategic shift in water governance—transforming wastewater into a valuable resource while strengthening long-term water security.
