Odisha boosts water-based adventure tourism across five districts

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has initiated plans to expand water-based adventure tourism by identifying suitable locations across five districts — Puri, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh.

As part of the initiative, a joint technical team will carry out physical verification of proposed tourism sites between May 4 and May 20. The exercise will cover beaches, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and dam locations identified for potential adventure tourism activities.

Officials said the verification process is being conducted in accordance with the Odisha Adventure Tourism Guidelines 2025, which lays down standards for safety, environmental sustainability, and operational feasibility.

The inspections are aimed at evaluating site suitability for activities such as boating, kayaking, jet skiing, water sports, and other adventure tourism projects before operational approvals are granted.

The move is part of the state government’s broader strategy to diversify tourism offerings, attract more visitors, and generate local employment opportunities through sustainable tourism development.
