Monsoon Arrives in Northern Odisha; IMD Warns of Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds

Bhubaneswar: After days of intense heat and oppressive humidity, the southwest monsoon has finally advanced into parts of northern and coastal Odisha, bringing welcome relief to residents, farmers and livestock across the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon has entered several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur. Meteorologists noted that this year’s monsoon progression is unusual, as the rain-bearing system entered Odisha through its northern region near Paradip and Baripada, rather than following its more common route through the southern districts of Malkangiri and Koraput.

The IMD has forecast fairly widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next 48 hours, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in districts such as Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam and Malkangiri.

In addition to rainfall, the weather agency has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph in some areas. Residents have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

The arrival of the monsoon is expected to bring a significant change in weather conditions across the state. Daytime temperatures are likely to fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next few days, providing much-needed respite from the prevailing hot and humid conditions that have affected many parts of Odisha in recent weeks.

The onset of monsoon rains is also expected to benefit the agricultural sector, as farmers prepare for the upcoming kharif cultivation season. Adequate rainfall during this period is considered crucial for sowing operations and maintaining water availability for crops.

With the monsoon now gaining momentum, weather officials continue to monitor its progress and have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay updated on forecasts and advisories, particularly in districts expected to receive heavy rainfall and strong winds.
