Bhubaneswar’s New Charcoal Plant to Turn 18,000 Tonnes of Green Waste into Valuable Resources Every Year

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards sustainable urban waste management, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to establish a 50-tonne-per-day (TPD) charcoal production facility that will convert green waste into smokeless charcoal and other value-added products.

The initiative addresses a growing challenge faced by the city. Every day, Bhubaneswar generates hundreds of tonnes of municipal waste, a substantial portion of which consists of green waste such as fallen leaves, tree branches, garden trimmings and vegetation collected from parks, roadsides and residential areas. Traditionally, much of this biomass has ended up in dumping sites, contributing little economic value while occupying valuable landfill space.

Once operational, the new facility will process approximately 18,000 tonnes of green waste annually. Through scientific treatment and biomass conversion technology, the waste will be transformed into smokeless charcoal and other useful by-products, creating a circular economy model where waste becomes a resource rather than a burden.

The charcoal plant is a key component of BMC’s larger 200 TPD Mega Solid Waste Processing Facility, with one-fourth of the overall processing capacity dedicated specifically to green waste management. The project reflects the city’s efforts to adopt innovative and environmentally responsible solutions to handle increasing volumes of urban waste.

Environmental experts point out that the benefits of the project extend well beyond waste disposal. Processing nearly 18,000 tonnes of biomass each year is expected to substantially reduce the open dumping and burning of green waste, practices that contribute significantly to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The smokeless charcoal produced by the facility can also serve as a cleaner alternative to conventional solid fuels, helping reduce environmental impacts associated with traditional fuel use.

The project aligns with Bhubaneswar’s broader vision of becoming a model city for sustainable urban development and resource-efficient waste management. By converting organic waste into marketable products, the initiative has the potential to generate economic value while simultaneously addressing environmental concerns.
