Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 206 out of 294 seats and comfortably surpassing the majority mark. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) finished a distant second with 81 seats.
Polling was held on April 23 and 29, with results declared on Monday, marking a historic political shift in the state.
Senior BJP leader Amit Shah has been appointed as the central observer for the legislature party meeting to be attended by the party’s 206 MLAs. He will be joined by Mohan Charan Majhi as co-observer to oversee the leadership selection process.
Speculation is mounting over the मुख्यमंत्री face, with Suvendu Adhikari emerging as a leading contender. The विधायक दल meeting is expected to take place this week, with the swearing-in ceremony likely around May 9.
Meanwhile, in Assam, the BJP has also retained power, winning 82 out of 126 seats. The party has reappointed observers for the leadership selection, paving the way for Himanta Biswa Sarma to begin his third term as Chief Minister.
The twin victories further consolidate BJP’s political position in eastern and northeastern India.
