Commonwealth Games Flag Passes to India as Ahmedabad Begins Journey Towards 2030

Bhubaneswar: The spotlight officially shifted from Glasgow to Ahmedabad as India took charge of preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the ceremonial handover of the Commonwealth flag at the closing ceremony marking the beginning of the country’s journey towards hosting the centenary edition of the Games.

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi received the Commonwealth flag on behalf of India, symbolising the official transition of hosting responsibilities.

India concluded the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in fourth place on the medals table with a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals.

Boxing emerged as India’s most successful discipline, producing a record haul of seven gold medals and three silver medals. Judoka Asmita Dey created history by winning India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo.

Weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu completed a remarkable hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals, while Tejaswin Shankar secured India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was India’s only multiple medallist in athletics, claiming silver in the 10,000 metres and bronze in the 5,000 metres. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra added a silver medal in the men’s javelin throw.

With the curtain falling on Glasgow 2026, attention now turns to Ahmedabad, which faces the challenge of delivering world-class sporting infrastructure, efficient organisation and a memorable centenary edition when the Commonwealth Games return to India in 2030.
