Bhubaneswar: A fire broke out late at night in the Trauma Care Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the emergency department at SCB Medical College and Hospital, triggering panic within the hospital premises.
The blaze reportedly started on the first floor of the Trauma Care ICU around 3 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the hospital’s fire department. Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot and firefighters worked swiftly to bring the situation under control.
Hospital authorities quickly evacuated patients from the ICU, ensuring that those in critical condition were safely shifted to the New Medicine ICU building within the hospital complex. Officials said the prompt action helped prevent any major casualties.
Senior officials, including the state Health Secretary, the District Collector and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, rushed to the hospital to supervise rescue and safety operations.
Meanwhile, Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister of Odisha, also arrived at the hospital soon after the incident. The Chief Minister visited the New Medicine building and met patients who had been shifted following the fire, enquiring about their condition.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze after sustained efforts, while authorities have begun assessing the cause of the incident. An investigation is expected to determine whether the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit or other technical fault.
Hospital services in the affected area were temporarily disrupted but have largely resumed after the situation was brought under control. Officials said patient safety remains the top priority as further inspections are carried out.
