Bhubaneswar: Some journeys are not measured in medals. They are measured in courage, perseverance and the lives we touch along the way.
At just 25 years old, Pallabi Deuri has already lived a story that embodies determination and resilience. Once a promising sprinter from Assam, she earned recognition on the athletics track with an impressive record of two gold and two silver medals in the 100-metre event. Like many young athletes, she dreamed of building a successful sporting career and making her mark in competitive athletics.
However, life presented challenges far greater than any race. Following the loss of her father, Pallabi found herself facing financial hardships that forced her to rethink her future. The pursuit of medals gave way to a more pressing responsibility—supporting her family and securing a stable livelihood.
During her athletic journey, Pallabi received encouragement from Saraswati Chand, sister of Olympian Dutee Chand. She trained in Odisha, continuing to nurture her sporting aspirations even as circumstances evolved around her.
Determined to create new opportunities, Pallabi chose a path rarely pursued by women. In 2025, she obtained a heavy vehicle driving licence and underwent specialized training to operate electric buses. Her dedication and hard work eventually led her to join Odisha’s Ama Bus service.
Today, Pallabi drives passengers safely through the roads of Keonjhar, becoming one of the women helping shape a more inclusive public transport workforce. Every day behind the wheel reflects not only professional achievement but also her determination to overcome adversity and break barriers in a traditionally male-dominated profession.
Her story serves as a powerful reminder that success is not always defined by podium finishes or sporting accolades. Sometimes, success is found in embracing responsibility, adapting to life’s challenges and continuing to move forward with dignity and purpose.
From racing against competitors on the track to navigating busy roads in service of the public, Pallabi Deuri’s journey demonstrates that resilience takes many forms. While her medals reflect athletic excellence, her decision to forge a new path and support her family reflects a different kind of victory—one defined by courage, sacrifice and unwavering determination.
In many ways, her greatest achievement may not be the races she won, but the barriers she continues to break, one kilometre at a time.
