Bhubaneswar: : Shazia Ilmi on Tuesday termed the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam a “historic and revolutionary” step, stating that it will ensure one-third representation for women in legislative bodies across the country.
Addressing the media, the BJP leader said that for nearly three decades, the proposed legislation faced repeated delays despite being introduced multiple times. “For 30 years, the Opposition engaged in delaying tactics… but finally the Act has become law,” she said.
Ilmi highlighted that the law will reserve 33% of seats for women in both Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies, significantly boosting women’s participation in governance and decision-making.
She also noted that a special session of Parliament had been convened beginning on the 16th to facilitate the passage of the legislation.
The enactment of the law is being viewed as a landmark reform aimed at enhancing gender representation in India’s political framework, with implementation expected following delimitation.
