IMD Warns Of Severe Heat Wave Across Central And Northwest India Till Month-End

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday warned that heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to persist across several parts of central India till the end of May, with temperatures expected to remain significantly above normal in many regions.

In its latest weather advisory, the IMD stated that heat wave conditions are likely to affect northwest India between May 24 and May 29, while parts of east peninsular India are expected to experience similar conditions from May 23 to May 26.

According to meteorologists, prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and people with existing medical conditions.

Several states across central and northwestern regions have already been witnessing soaring daytime temperatures, with dry weather and strong solar radiation intensifying heat stress conditions.

The IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, stay adequately hydrated, and take necessary precautions against heatstroke and dehydration.

Authorities in several states are also expected to issue local advisories and activate heat action plans to reduce the impact of the extreme weather conditions.

The recurring heat wave episodes have once again highlighted growing concerns over climate variability and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events across India during the summer season.
