Bhubaneswar: Kerala has officially been renamed “Keralam” following President Droupadi Murmu’s assent to the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026.
The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on August 11 and the Rajya Sabha on August 12 before receiving presidential assent. The legislation amends the First Schedule of the Constitution to replace “Kerala” with “Keralam.”
The move fulfils a long-standing demand to officially recognise the state by its traditional Malayalam name. The Kerala Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution seeking the change in 2024.
The name “Keralam” reflects the state’s linguistic and cultural identity and marks a significant milestone in its administrative and constitutional history.
A historic moment for Kerala’s identity, language and heritage.
