Bhubaneswar: NDA leaders held a march inside the Parliament premises during the Monsoon Session on Tuesday, protesting alleged police action against students demonstrating in Jharkhand.
The protesting MPs raised concerns over the alleged treatment of student protesters and demanded answers from the Jharkhand government over the reported use of force during the demonstrations.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleged that Devendra Nath Mahto, who is reportedly on hunger strike, was beaten during the previous night. Dubey also made allegations against an officer posted at the protest site, questioning his conduct and referring to his reported disputes with the Election Commission.
Dubey further alleged that Dharmendra, whom he described as the main accused, was arrested from the residence of one of the senior-most officials of the Jharkhand government.
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also raised the issue in Parliament, alleging that students in Jharkhand had faced violence during the protests.
“The children in Jharkhand are being subjected to atrocities,” Ranaut said, alleging that protesters were beaten and that water cannons and tear gas were used against them. She said the MPs were raising the matter to seek answers from the authorities.
The NDA march comes amid growing political attention over the student protests in Jharkhand, with opposition and ruling-party leaders taking competing positions on the developments.
The allegations made by the BJP MPs could not independently establish the circumstances surrounding each incident. Further clarification from the Jharkhand government and police authorities is awaited.
The issue is expected to remain a point of contention during the ongoing Parliament Monsoon Session, as the NDA seeks accountability over the alleged police action against the protesting students.
