Odisha Approves Modern Commercial Complex to Revitalise Koraput’s Historic Market Areas

Bhubaneswar: In a major step towards urban renewal and economic revitalisation, the Odisha government has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose commercial complex in Koraput to replace the city’s ageing market infrastructure.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra cleared the proposal following an on-ground inspection of key trading zones, including Chandan Pokhari and Podala Line. The minister noted that several existing market structures in these areas are nearly 80 years old and have deteriorated to a level that poses safety risks and limits commercial activity.

Acknowledging the urgent need for modern facilities, Mahapatra directed the District Collector to immediately prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and fast-track the project. The proposed complex is envisioned as a central economic hub equipped with contemporary amenities to support traders while offering residents a safer, more organised, and convenient shopping environment.

Officials said the new market complex will replace crumbling infrastructure with a planned, multi-functional space designed to accommodate evolving commercial needs. The initiative is expected to boost local trade, improve urban aesthetics, and strengthen Koraput’s role as a key economic centre in southern Odisha.

The project reflects the state government’s broader focus on upgrading urban infrastructure in smaller towns and district headquarters, with the dual objective of improving civic facilities and fostering sustainable regional economic growth.
