Odisha Clears ₹84,000 Crore Adani Coal-to-Chemicals Project on Former UMPP Land

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has approved a major industrial proposal by Adani Enterprises Ltd to establish a ₹84,000 crore coal-to-chemicals complex in Sundargarh district, utilising land originally acquired for a scrapped Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP).

The project will be set up on around 3,047 acres spanning six villages, comprising both private and government land acquired between 2015 and 2018. The UMPP was formally cancelled in 2023, paving the way for alternative industrial use of the land.

The proposed facility will be developed by OD Syn-Gas Chemicals Limited (OSGCL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, and will employ coal gasification technology to produce key industrial chemicals such as methanol and ammonia. Officials said the project is expected to be among the largest of its kind in India.

The decision is likely to impact another proposed power project in the region. In response, the state government has initiated steps to reconstitute a rehabilitation committee to address compensation, resettlement, and benefits for families affected by land acquisition.

Authorities said the move aligns with efforts to repurpose previously acquired land for large-scale industrial development, boosting investment and economic activity in the region.
