Bhubaneswar: The Higher Education Department, Government of Odisha has directed all colleges across the state to establish a 500-metre drug-free zone around their campuses to promote a safe, healthy and conducive academic environment for students.
Issued in accordance with the guidelines of the Narco Coordination Centre, the directive aims to shield students from the influence and availability of alcohol, tobacco products and narcotic substances in the vicinity of educational institutions.
As part of the initiative, colleges have been instructed to conduct on-ground inspections to verify that no shops or establishments within the 500-metre radius are selling prohibited substances. Institutions must document their findings and submit compliance reports by July 15.
To ensure uniform implementation, the Higher Education Department has circulated a standard reporting format for all colleges. The department will closely monitor compliance and take necessary follow-up measures to ensure the effective enforcement of the guidelines.
The initiative forms part of the state’s broader efforts to create healthier, addiction-free educational campuses, strengthen student well-being, and foster an environment that supports learning without the risks associated with substance abuse.
