Bhubaneswar: Odisha has recorded its highest-ever electricity demand as the ongoing severe heatwave pushed power consumption across the state to an unprecedented 6,739 megawatts (MW), surpassing last year’s peak demand of 6,447 MW.
The sharp rise in electricity usage has been primarily driven by increased cooling requirements during extreme summer temperatures affecting large parts of the state.
In response to the surge in demand, Tata Power-led power distribution companies operating in Odisha have activated a large-scale emergency preparedness and response mechanism to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and rapid restoration during outages.
Officials said more than 26,000 personnel have been deployed across the state along with critical infrastructure and emergency restoration teams to handle possible disruptions caused by high load conditions and adverse weather events.
As part of the preparedness measures, utilities have positioned transformers, electric poles, conductors, mobile DG sets, and specialized restoration equipment at strategic locations to quickly address power failures arising from storms, strong winds, or technical faults.
Authorities stated that a centralized monitoring and operational control system has also been activated for real-time tracking of network performance, fault detection, and load management across distribution zones.
A 24-hour integrated customer care system is functioning to facilitate faster complaint resolution, outage communication, and coordination with consumers during emergencies.
Power sector officials said the current demand trend reflects the growing electricity consumption pattern in Odisha, particularly during prolonged heatwave conditions, and highlighted the need for continued strengthening of transmission and distribution infrastructure.
The state government and distribution companies have urged consumers to use electricity judiciously while assuring that all possible measures are being taken to maintain stable and uninterrupted power supply during the extreme summer period.
