Bhubaneswar: Bibhuti Bhusan Jena has announced that all buses operated by the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation will be gradually converted into electric vehicles as part of the state government’s push for eco-friendly and economical public transport.
The initiative is aimed at reducing fuel dependence, lowering carbon emissions and modernising public transport infrastructure across Odisha.
Alongside the transition to electric buses, the government is also expanding EV charging infrastructure throughout the state. According to the Transport Minister, work on 30 out of the proposed 100 EV charging stations has already been completed, including 15 charging stations in Bhubaneswar.
Earlier, the state government had informed the Assembly that 100 EV charging stations would be developed during the first phase of implementation. The plan includes 21 charging stations in Bhubaneswar, 38 at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), 23 at truck terminals and 18 at other strategic locations across the state.
Officials stated that the expansion of charging infrastructure is essential to support the growing adoption of electric vehicles and ensure reliable charging access for public and commercial transport systems.
The move is being seen as part of Odisha’s broader clean mobility and sustainable transport strategy aimed at promoting greener urban transportation while reducing long-term operational costs in the public transport sector.
