Bhubaneswar: The second BRICS Technical Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction, hosted by India, will be held in Puri from June 3 to 5, 2026, bringing together disaster management experts and officials from BRICS nations and partner countries.
The high-level meeting will focus on strengthening international cooperation in disaster preparedness, risk reduction, climate resilience, and emergency response mechanisms.
Officials said the discussions will primarily revolve around sharing best practices in disaster management, leveraging advanced technology for early warning and preparedness systems, and developing coordinated strategies for mitigating risks associated with natural calamities.
Experts attending the event are also expected to deliberate on climate-related disasters, community resilience models, data-driven forecasting systems, and sustainable disaster management frameworks.
Odisha was selected as the host location in recognition of the state’s globally acknowledged disaster preparedness and response model, particularly its success in handling cyclones and large-scale evacuations.
Over the years, Odisha has gained international attention for its efficient cyclone warning dissemination systems, timely evacuation operations, disaster-resilient infrastructure, and coordinated emergency management strategies that have significantly reduced casualties during severe weather events.
Officials noted that hosting the BRICS technical meeting in Odisha will provide participating delegates an opportunity to study the state’s disaster management practices firsthand and promote knowledge exchange among member nations.
The event is expected to further strengthen India’s role in global disaster risk reduction cooperation while showcasing Odisha’s transformation into a model state for disaster resilience and climate adaptation strategies.
