Odisha Makes Electric Vehicles Mandatory For Government Departments From June 1

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has made it mandatory for all state government departments to purchase only electric vehicles (EVs) from June 1, in a major push toward clean mobility, fuel conservation, and sustainable transportation.

Under the new directive, all government offices and departments will be required to procure only electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers for official use. The decision forms part of a broader fuel-saving and sustainability initiative launched by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi amid concerns over rising global crude oil prices and increasing fuel consumption.

The government has also instructed departments to prioritize hiring electric four-wheelers for official duties wherever feasible.

According to the directive, petrol and diesel-powered vehicles will be allowed only under exceptional circumstances or for specific operational requirements where electric alternatives may not be practical.

Officials said the initiative is part of an eight-point action plan aimed at reducing fuel dependency, promoting green energy adoption, and improving energy efficiency across government operations.

In addition to the EV mandate, all departments have been directed to cut their monthly fuel consumption by at least 10 percent as part of the state’s broader conservation strategy.

The move is expected to significantly accelerate electric vehicle adoption in Odisha while also encouraging the development of charging infrastructure and sustainable transport ecosystems.

The policy aligns with India’s larger national objective of reducing fossil fuel dependence, lowering carbon emissions, and promoting cleaner mobility solutions across both public and private sectors.
