Railways Clears ₹895 Crore for Metro Power Upgrade, Bridge Infrastructure Boost

Bhubaneswar: Indian Railways has approved projects worth ₹895.30 crore aimed at strengthening power systems and critical bridge infrastructure to enhance capacity and efficiency.

A major portion—₹671.72 crore—has been allocated for the upgrade of Kolkata Metro. The project includes installation of seven new traction substations and augmentation of the power system from 11 kV to 33 kV. This upgrade is expected to support higher train frequency and increased passenger capacity.

Officials said the improvements will enable reduction of train headway from the current 5 minutes to approximately 2.5 minutes, significantly boosting operational efficiency and meeting rising commuter demand in the city.

In addition, ₹223.58 crore has been sanctioned for a bridge project in Adra. The project aims to strengthen a key freight corridor, improving connectivity for industrial transport and ensuring more reliable movement of goods.

The approvals reflect a broader push to modernise railway infrastructure, enhance urban transit systems, and support industrial logistics through targeted investments.
