Bhubaneswar: In a symbolic gesture of cultural pride and national support, Varanasi will gift traditional Banarasi sarees to the families of Indian cricketers ahead of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.
The initiative will be facilitated through the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), highlighting India’s rich handloom heritage while extending moral support to the Men in Blue as they prepare for the global tournament.
Officials said the move aims to promote Banarasi weavers and artisans, while also showcasing India’s soft power through its iconic textile traditions on an international sporting stage.
Banarasi sarees, renowned worldwide for their intricate craftsmanship, silk weaving, and cultural legacy, originate from Varanasi and are among India’s most celebrated handloom products.
The gesture has been welcomed as a blend of sports diplomacy, cultural outreach, and artisan empowerment, reinforcing the message that the nation stands united behind its cricket team.
