India Announces Rare Earth Corridors to Strengthen Critical Mineral Supply Chain

Bhubaneswar: India has announced plans to establish dedicated Rare Earth Corridors across Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s position in the global critical minerals landscape.

The corridor-based approach is aimed at building an integrated ecosystem for the exploration, processing, and downstream manufacturing of rare earth elements, which are essential for sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, electronics, defence systems, and advanced technologies.

Officials said the initiative is designed to improve supply chain security at a time when global demand for rare earths is rising sharply and geopolitical sensitivities around critical mineral access are increasing. Currently, global production and processing of rare earth elements remain highly concentrated, prompting many countries to diversify sources and reduce strategic vulnerabilities.

By leveraging the mineral potential and coastal advantages of the four states, the corridors are expected to facilitate infrastructure development, attract investment, and support research and innovation in material sciences and high-tech manufacturing.

The move aligns with India’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy, which focuses on reducing import dependence in strategically vital sectors while building domestic capabilities for future-oriented industries.

Experts note that if implemented effectively, the Rare Earth Corridors could help position India as a key player in global value chains for clean energy and advanced manufacturing over the next decade.
