Government of India Highlights Progress of World’s Largest Cooperative Grain Storage Scheme

Bhubaneswar: The Government of India has highlighted the progress of the world’s largest cooperative grain storage scheme, launched to strengthen food security, improve agricultural infrastructure and meet the growing food grain requirements of both India and global markets.

According to officials, the scheme has not only benefited farmers through improved storage facilities and reduced post-harvest losses but has also contributed to strengthening the country’s rural economy and agricultural supply chain systems.

The initiative received Union Cabinet approval on May 31, 2023, and was formally inaugurated by Narendra Modi on February 24, 2024.

Authorities stated that the expansion of cooperative grain storage infrastructure has created opportunities for farmers to store produce scientifically, reduce distress sales and secure better market prices for agricultural commodities.

Officials also noted that the scheme is expected to improve decentralised food storage capacity, strengthen procurement systems and enhance the role of cooperative institutions in rural economic development.

The government believes the initiative will play an important role in ensuring long-term food security, increasing farmers’ incomes and improving agricultural resilience through modern storage and logistics infrastructure across the country.
