Bhubaneswar: The Central Government has suspended sugar exports with immediate effect, halting overseas shipments until September 30, 2026, or until further orders are issued, according to reports.
The move comes amid efforts to prevent a rise in domestic sugar prices at a time when food inflation continues to remain economically and politically sensitive for households across the country.
Officials said the restriction applies to both raw and refined sugar exports. The government is aiming to ensure adequate domestic availability and maintain price stability in the local market.
However, certain export consignments already in the logistics pipeline have been exempted from the restriction. Shipments will still be permitted if loading operations had commenced before the official notification, if vessels had already berthed or anchored at Indian ports, or if sugar stocks had already been handed over to customs authorities prior to the export suspension taking effect.
India is among the world’s largest sugar producers and exporters, and any restriction on exports is expected to have implications for global sugar supply and pricing trends.
The decision reflects the government’s broader strategy of balancing export earnings with domestic food security and inflation management.
