Kendrapada Rasabali Featured in Centre’s GI Promotion Drive as India Targets 10,000 Registrations by 2030

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 6: Odisha’s iconic Kendrapada Rasabali has received a significant boost after being featured in the Union government’s initiative to strengthen India’s Geographical Indication (GI) ecosystem and promote traditional products on the global stage.

The Centre has set an ambitious target of achieving 10,000 GI registrations by 2030, aiming to enhance exports, preserve cultural heritage and create international recognition for India’s unique regional products.

In a recent Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, Kendrapada Rasabali was highlighted among the country’s recognised GI-tagged food products, alongside renowned delicacies such as Bardhaman Mihidana, Sitabhog from West Bengal and Tirupati Laddu from Andhra Pradesh.

To expand the reach of GI products, the government has announced a series of measures including export promotion support, tourism-linked marketing, financial assistance and dedicated platforms for branding and sales. The initiatives are intended to benefit artisans, farmers, producer groups and small businesses associated with traditional products.

According to official data, India currently has more than 800 registered GI products, with over 600 registrations granted since 2014. The government has also reduced GI application and renewal fees to encourage greater participation and recognition of traditional regional products.

Programmes such as PM Ekta Mall, One Station One Product (OSOP), APEDA export initiatives and GI tourism trails are being leveraged to transform local specialities into globally recognised brands and strengthen market access for GI-certified products.

The inclusion of Kendrapada Rasabali in the Centre’s promotional campaign is expected to increase national and international visibility for the traditional Odia dessert, providing new opportunities for producers and helping showcase Odisha’s rich culinary heritage to a wider audience.
