Bhubaneswar: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Wednesday welcomed the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, describing it as a long-awaited and appropriate step toward enhancing women’s representation in legislative bodies.
Addressing the media in Lucknow, Mayawati said that despite the delay in implementation, her party supports the provision of 33% reservation for women in Parliament, including the Lok Sabha, and State Legislative Assemblies.
However, she emphasised the need for sub-categorisation within the quota, calling for separate reservations for women belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). She argued that such a move would ensure fair representation for those who are socially, politically, and economically marginalised.
“If separate reservations are provided for the truly exploited and marginalised women… it would be both appropriate and historic,” she said.
Her remarks add to the ongoing political discourse surrounding the implementation framework of the women’s reservation law, particularly the demand for inclusive representation across different social groups.
