BHUBANESWAR: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will install six High Wind Speed Recorders (HWSR) along the coastline of Odisha to improve the measurement of extreme wind speeds during cyclones and severe storm events.
Officials said the advanced instruments will be installed in six coastal districts — Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening Odisha’s cyclone monitoring and early warning systems by enabling more accurate recording of high-intensity wind speeds during extreme weather conditions.
Meteorological experts said the upgraded infrastructure will enhance forecasting accuracy, improve disaster preparedness and support timely warnings for vulnerable coastal regions frequently affected by cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal.
Odisha, one of India’s most cyclone-prone states, has significantly expanded its weather monitoring and disaster management infrastructure over the past decade to minimise loss of life and property during severe storms.
