Odisha Proposes English Spelling Changes for 24 Place Names

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has proposed changes to the English spellings of 24 place names across the state, including renaming Khurda as “Khoradha,” to more accurately reflect their original Odia pronunciation and historical forms.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at preserving Odisha’s linguistic, cultural, and historical heritage by aligning official English spellings with authentic Odia usage. The proposed changes will apply to government records, maps, signages, and official communications once finalised.

The state government has issued a public notice inviting objections and suggestions from citizens within 15 days of the notification. Feedback received during this period will be examined before the final decision is taken.

Authorities said the move is part of a broader effort to strengthen Odia identity and cultural authenticity in administrative practices, while ensuring clarity and consistency in official nomenclature.
