Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s tourism sector is witnessing remarkable growth, with more than 56 lakh tourists visiting the state between January and May 2026. The surge in arrivals reflects the state’s expanding appeal as it strengthens its position as one of India’s fastest-growing tourism destinations.
Leading the growth is the temple town of Puri, which registered a 22 per cent increase in tourist footfall compared to the corresponding period last year. The city remains the backbone of Odisha’s tourism economy, driven by the immense spiritual significance of the Jagannath Temple. In 2025, Puri alone attracted nearly 2.43 crore visitors, underlining the continued strength of the state’s religious tourism circuit.
However, Odisha’s tourism landscape is rapidly diversifying beyond pilgrimage travel. The state’s scenic coastline, including destinations such as Konark and Chandrabhaga Beach, continues to draw beach lovers, while nature enthusiasts are increasingly exploring Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon.
Wildlife and eco-tourism destinations are also contributing significantly to the sector’s growth. Protected areas such as Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Bhitarkanika National Park, and Similipal Tiger Reserve are attracting visitors seeking immersive nature and adventure experiences.
To sustain momentum, the state government has launched several tourism-focused initiatives, including caravan tourism, eco-retreats, water sports facilities, scuba diving experiences, and coastal tourism infrastructure projects. These efforts are aimed at transforming Odisha into a year-round destination capable of catering to a wide range of travellers.
With an ambitious target of attracting 5 crore tourists annually, Odisha is positioning itself as a major tourism hub, leveraging its unique blend of spirituality, natural beauty, biodiversity, heritage, and adventure tourism. The strong performance during the first five months of 2026 suggests that the state may be entering a new phase of sustained tourism-driven growth.
