BHUBANESWAR: In a first for Odisha, researchers will cultivate a range of exotic and colourful coconut varieties sourced from different parts of the world as part of a scientific study aimed at evaluating their suitability for the state’s climatic conditions.
The research initiative is being undertaken by the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology and will be implemented on 1.5 acres of land at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Sakhigopal after the onset of the monsoon.
The project will introduce several unique coconut varieties, including Nigeria’s Green Dwarf, West Africa’s Red Dwarf, Fiji’s New Leka Dwarf, Lakshadweep’s Orange Dwarf, Papua New Guinea’s High Papua, as well as the Indian varieties Dwipa Sona and Dwipa Haripatha.
Researchers will assess the adaptability of these varieties to Odisha’s agro-climatic conditions and evaluate key parameters such as disease resistance, productivity, quality of coconut water, oil content and overall crop performance.
Given Odisha’s vulnerability to frequent cyclones and strong coastal winds, special attention is being given to dwarf coconut varieties, which are considered relatively more resistant to wind damage and easier to manage than taller palm varieties.
Scientists believe that if the trial proves successful, the new coconut varieties could be promoted among farmers across the state, helping diversify coconut cultivation while potentially improving productivity and resilience against extreme weather conditions.
The initiative is expected to contribute to agricultural innovation in Odisha and open new opportunities for coconut growers through the introduction of high-value and climate-resilient planting material.
