ODISHA TO DEVELOP MODERN HIGHWAY REST STOPS EVERY 50 KM FOR SAFER, MORE COMFORTABLE TRAVEL

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is planning to establish wayside amenity centres at intervals of around 50 kilometres along National Highways, Expressways, State Highways and other major roads across the state.

The proposal was discussed at a high-level meeting chaired by Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, with the focus on improving safety, convenience and comfort for people undertaking long-distance journeys.

The proposed facilities are expected to include:

  • 🚻 Separate toilets for men and women
  • ⚡ EV charging stations
  • ⛽ Fuel outlets
  • 🍽️ Food courts
  • 🛋️ Rest areas for travellers and drivers

The facilities are intended to benefit motorists, truck drivers, bus passengers and other highway users. By providing safe and convenient places to stop, the initiative is also expected to encourage drivers to take regular breaks and reduce fatigue-related road risks.

For implementation, the state government plans to enter into MoUs with public-sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The government will provide suitable land, while the OMCs will be responsible for operating and maintaining the facilities.

The initiative is part of Odisha’s broader effort to develop modern, traveller-friendly road infrastructure and make long-distance travel across the state safer, cleaner and more comfortable.

From better roads to better rest stops, Odisha is looking to make the journey itself safer—not just the destination.
