NATIONAL HANDLOOM DAY: INDIA CELEBRATES WEAVERS, TRADITION AND THE SWADESHI SPIRIT

Bhubaneswar: Every year on August 7, India observes National Handloom Day to honour the country’s weavers and artisans, whose skills support rural livelihoods while preserving India’s rich cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged citizens, particularly younger social-media users, to share “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) reels featuring their favourite handloom outfits and products using #NationalHandloomDay. The campaign aims to bring greater visibility to traditional Indian textiles and encourage the use of Swadeshi products.

The social-media push received a mixed response. Supporters welcomed the effort to promote traditional crafts, strengthen artisan livelihoods and connect handloom with younger audiences. Some critics, however, described the Gen Z-focused outreach as forced, arguing that other pressing national concerns deserved greater attention.

Despite the debate, many people joined the campaign by showcasing their handloom sarees, dresses and other traditional products online, helping amplify the work of local weavers and craftsmen across popular social-media platforms.

From the loom to the timeline, National Handloom Day is putting India’s timeless craftsmanship in the spotlight.
