Odisha Unveils Ambitious Tourism Expansion Plan, Targets 15 Iconic Destinations and 15 Lakh Jobs by 2036

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced an ambitious tourism development roadmap aimed at transforming the state into a leading eco-cultural tourism hub in Asia. The plan envisions the development of 15 iconic tourism destinations and the creation of nearly 15 lakh livelihood opportunities by 2036 under the state’s long-term vision document, “Viksit Odisha at 2036.”

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the seventh edition of the Konark Eco Retreat, a flagship initiative showcasing Odisha’s growing focus on sustainable and experiential tourism. The Chief Minister underlined tourism as a key economic driver, particularly for employment generation among rural and low-income communities, while simultaneously preserving the state’s rich natural and cultural heritage.

Addressing the gathering, Majhi said the government’s strategy focuses on strengthening tourism infrastructure, expanding destination diversity, and increasing both domestic and international tourist footfall. “Tourism has the potential to become a cornerstone of Odisha’s growth story by creating inclusive and sustainable livelihoods,” he noted.

The Chief Minister cited eco-retreats at Satkosia, Bhitarkanika, Daringbadi, and Sonapur as successful models of nature-based tourism that blend conservation with economic development. These initiatives, he said, demonstrate how responsible tourism can benefit local communities while protecting fragile ecosystems.

The Konark Eco Retreat, set against the scenic Puri–Konark Marine Drive, will operate for 90 days, offering visitors luxury tented accommodation along with curated experiences such as yoga sessions, water sports, local cuisine, and cultural performances. The retreat has emerged as a major attraction, drawing tourists seeking a blend of comfort, nature, and culture.

With this renewed push, the Odisha government aims to elevate the state’s tourism profile globally, leveraging its coastline, forests, wildlife reserves, and heritage sites to drive long-term economic and social development.
