Bhubaneswar: The Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has advanced the Geographical Indication (GI) tag applications for three traditional Odisha food products — Sambalpur Sarpotia, Manikpatna Dahi and Dhenkanal Pala Baurali — in an effort to promote the state’s distinctive culinary heritage on national and international platforms.
OUAT Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Pravat Kumar Roul said the applications have reached the final approval stage. He highlighted the university’s continued focus on research, innovation and initiatives aimed at benefiting rural communities.
Established in 1962, OUAT is Odisha’s sole agricultural university and works across education, agricultural research and skill development. The university has also recently secured NABL accreditation for its Centre for Wildlife Health.
As part of its expansion, OUAT is establishing new colleges and extending financial support to postgraduate and PhD scholars through stipends. Its Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) have also conducted numerous training programmes for farmers and rural youth.
The proposed GI recognition for the three traditional foods is expected to strengthen their identity, protect their regional heritage and create wider opportunities for Odisha’s traditional food producers.
