Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a nationwide “Nation First” appeal, urging citizens to adopt lifestyle and consumption changes aimed at strengthening India’s economic resilience and reducing dependence on imports.
The campaign, promoted through MyGov India, outlines seven key appeals focused on self-reliance, sustainable living, and support for domestic industries.
The Prime Minister emphasized that small behavioural changes by citizens can collectively reduce economic pressure during a period of global uncertainty and strengthen the country’s long-term economic stability.
Seven Key Appeals Under the Campaign
-
Prefer work-from-home wherever possible to reduce fuel consumption and infrastructure pressure.
-
Avoid purchasing gold for one year to help reduce import expenditure and manage the trade deficit.
-
Use metro systems and public transport instead of private vehicles to cut petrol and diesel consumption.
-
Reduce edible oil consumption to improve public health and lower import dependence.
-
Promote natural farming and reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers.
-
Prioritise Indian-made products under the “Vocal for Local” initiative.
-
Avoid unnecessary foreign travel for one year to support domestic tourism and conserve foreign exchange reserves.
Officials said the initiative is intended to reduce imports of major commodities such as crude oil, gold, edible oils, and fertilisers, which account for a substantial portion of India’s import bill.
Economists note that even moderate reductions in consumption could positively impact foreign exchange reserves, improve the trade balance, and support rupee stability. The campaign is also expected to encourage domestic manufacturing and strengthen local businesses.
The appeal has generated mixed reactions. Supporters view it as a patriotic push toward self-reliance, while critics argue that economic challenges should not disproportionately shift responsibility onto citizens.
Industry observers say sectors such as jewellery, aviation, imported consumer goods, and luxury travel could witness temporary demand shifts if the campaign gains broad public participation.
The campaign is built around a “Power of One” philosophy, stressing that collective action by 1.4 billion citizens can create substantial national impact and reinforce economic resilience through behavioural change.
