Bhubaneswar: A massive car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort on Monday evening has left 12 people dead and several others injured, sending shockwaves across the nation. The blast, which occurred near Gate No. 1 of the monument, involved an i20 car that had been parked in the area for nearly 90 minutes before it exploded.
According to eyewitnesses, the car was seen moving slowly before coming to a halt. “It stood there for more than an hour. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion that shook the entire area,” said one witness. The impact of the blast gutted nearby vehicles and shattered windows in surrounding shops and houses.
Security agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Delhi Police’s Special Cell, have launched a full-scale probe. CCTV footage from the area has captured visuals of the car and a suspect seen near the vehicle shortly before the explosion.
Authorities have confirmed the arrest of a key suspect, identified as Umar Nabi, reportedly a doctor by profession. Investigators are currently questioning him to uncover possible links and motives behind the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reviewed the situation early Tuesday morning along with Home Minister Amit Shah, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
“The entire nation stands with the victims of this unfortunate incident. The conspirators behind this blast will not be spared. All those responsible will be brought to justice,” the Prime Minister said before departing for Bhutan.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly and that findings will be made public soon.
Security has been tightened across Delhi, especially around Red Fort, India Gate, and major transport hubs, as authorities remain on high alert.
The incident marks one of the most serious security breaches in recent years near a national monument, reigniting concerns about urban terrorism and intelligence gaps in the heart of India’s capital.
