Bhubaneswar: State-run steel major Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is considering relocating the proposed expansion of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to the Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) due to persistent land acquisition challenges in Odisha.
The ₹30,000 crore expansion project is critical to SAIL’s long-term target of achieving 35.65 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) production capacity by 2030–31. Officials indicated that a final decision was expected by mid-April, with the proposal likely to shift to DSP in West Bengal if land clearance for RSP is not secured.
The potential relocation could have significant economic implications for Rourkela, as the expansion is expected to drive industrial growth, employment, and ancillary development in the region.
In an effort to resolve the land dispute, RSP has offered compensation packages to affected villagers, including ₹5.16 lakh per hutment, developed land, and contractual employment for one member of each displaced family.
The outcome of the decision will be closely watched, as it will influence not only SAIL’s expansion roadmap but also regional industrial development dynamics.
