Bhubaneswar Marks 78 Years as Capital, Emerges as Eastern India’s Healthcare Hub

Bhubaneswar: As Bhubaneswar completes 78 years since being designated the capital of Odisha in 1948, the city is rapidly establishing itself as a प्रमुख healthcare destination for eastern India.

A key indicator of this growth is AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where nearly 30 percent of patients now come from outside the state, including neighbouring West Bengal, reflecting rising trust in the city’s medical infrastructure.

The healthcare ecosystem is expanding across both public and private sectors. Capital Hospital alone caters to around 5,000 patients ежедневно, supported by its PGIMER facility, with plans underway to establish a dedicated burn unit. Overall, the city currently hosts around 50 major hospitals offering multispeciality and super speciality care.

Further strengthening this ecosystem are upcoming projects such as the 200-bed Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital at NISER, which will boost oncology services. The facility will be supported by a medical cyclotron for advanced diagnostic capabilities.

Backed by a ₹5,008 crore allocation under state health missions, Bhubaneswar is steadily positioning itself as a regional healthcare powerhouse, catering to patients across eastern India with advanced and accessible medical services.
