Chhena Poda Origin Debate Raises Concerns Over GI Recognition

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s iconic dessert Chhena Poda has become the centre of a growing debate over its true origin, with experts warning that conflicting claims could impact its Geographical Indication (GI) recognition and cultural identity.

The sweet, closely associated with Nayagarh, is widely believed to have been created by Bidyadhar Sahu of Daspalla. Historical accounts suggest he first experimented with leftover chhena by mixing it with sugar and semolina, wrapping it in banana leaves, and baking it over a traditional chulha—giving the dessert its distinctive caramelised flavour and texture.

However, his son Sudarshan Sahu is credited with popularising the sweet by commercialising it from Kacheri Bazaar, helping it gain widespread recognition across Odisha and beyond. This distinction between the “creator” and the “populariser” has now become central to the ongoing debate.

Stakeholders, including traders and researchers, caution that the lack of a unified historical narrative could delay the GI tag process. They emphasise that clearly establishing origin and legacy is crucial not only for formal recognition but also for preserving authenticity and ensuring long-term economic value for Odisha’s culinary heritage.

The development has sparked renewed discussions on documenting traditional knowledge and safeguarding the identity of regional specialities amid growing commercial interest.
