IMD Revises Monsoon Forecast, Expects 90% of Long-Period Average Rainfall This Year

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its forecast for the 2026 Southwest Monsoon season, predicting that India is likely to receive rainfall amounting to 90 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).

The forecast was issued as part of the weather agency’s second outlook for the Southwest Monsoon. The revised estimate is slightly lower than the first forecast released on April 13, which had projected seasonal rainfall at 92 per cent of the LPA.

According to IMD, the northeastern region of the country is expected to receive normal rainfall during the monsoon season. However, most other parts of India are likely to experience below-normal rainfall.

The Southwest Monsoon, which typically accounts for nearly 75 per cent of India’s annual rainfall, plays a crucial role in agriculture, water resources, hydropower generation and the overall economy. Variations in monsoon performance can significantly influence crop production, reservoir levels and rural livelihoods.

Meteorologists will continue to monitor evolving oceanic and atmospheric conditions and issue periodic updates as the monsoon progresses across the country.
