MP Assembly Passes Resolution Seeking 33% Reservation for Women After Delimitation

Bhubaneswar: The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly late Monday night passed a resolution advocating 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state Assemblies, to be implemented after the delimitation process.

The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and adopted through a voice vote following a prolonged nine-hour debate. The session witnessed sharp exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches, with the Indian National Congress staging a walkout.

The resolution emphasised that reserving one-third of seats for women would be a step toward honouring “Nari Shakti” and ensuring holistic development and empowerment of women, once delimitation is completed.

During the debate, the Chief Minister criticised the Congress for what he described as inaction on women’s empowerment during its tenure at the Centre. He argued that delays in delimitation and constitutional processes had hindered timely implementation of women’s reservation.

Highlighting the state’s efforts, Yadav pointed out that women currently serve as district collectors in 17 out of 55 districts in Madhya Pradesh, presenting it as an example of growing female representation in governance.

He also referenced the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, stating that it reflects the government’s commitment to increasing women’s participation in legislative bodies.
