Odisha Clears Adani’s ₹84,000 Crore Coal-to-Chemicals Project on Former UMPP Land

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has approved a major industrial proposal by Adani Enterprises Ltd to set up a ₹84,000 crore coal-to-chemicals complex in Sundargarh district, utilising land earlier acquired for a scrapped Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP).

The project will come up on around 3,047 acres of land spanning six villages, originally acquired between 2015 and 2018 for the UMPP, which was officially cancelled in 2023. The land includes both private and government holdings.

The proposed facility will be developed by OD Syn-Gas Chemicals Limited (OSGCL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, and will use advanced coal gasification technology to produce key industrial chemicals such as methanol and ammonia. Officials say the complex is expected to be among the largest of its kind in India.

The decision is likely to reshape industrial activity in the region, though it also impacts another proposed power project in the area. In response, the state government has initiated steps to reconstitute a rehabilitation committee to address compensation, resettlement, and benefits for families affected by land acquisition.

The project is seen as part of Odisha’s broader push to attract large-scale industrial investments while repurposing previously acquired land for new economic opportunities.
