Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has initiated plans to establish modern Handloom Hubs and Apparel Parks in multiple districts to strengthen the state’s traditional weaving sector through advanced technology, improved infrastructure, and enhanced market access.
As part of the initiative, dedicated projects are being developed in Cuttack, Bargarh, and Jajpur districts with the aim of transforming Odisha’s handloom ecosystem into a technologically driven and globally competitive industry.
In Cuttack district, officials recently discussed the establishment of an AI and Blockchain-supported Handloom Hub at Abhimanpur. The proposed facility will come up on 2.77 acres of land with an estimated investment of ₹13.51 crore. The project is expected to integrate modern digital technologies into the handloom value chain, including production tracking, quality assurance, branding, and supply chain transparency.
The government believes the use of Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain technology can help improve efficiency, authenticity verification, and global marketability of Odisha’s traditional handloom products.
Meanwhile, in Bargarh district, authorities have proposed a Handloom and Apparel Park at Govindpur mauja with an estimated cost of ₹20 crore. The project will be developed over 9.35 acres and is expected to emerge as a major textile and weaving hub for western Odisha.
The proposed park is likely to benefit thousands of weavers and artisans from nearby districts including Sambalpur, Subarnapur, and Balangir by providing improved workspace, marketing support, apparel manufacturing facilities, and better access to buyers and exporters.
Officials said the initiative forms part of Odisha’s broader strategy to preserve its rich handloom heritage while modernizing the sector to create sustainable livelihoods, attract investment, and increase employment opportunities for traditional weaving communities.
Odisha is known for its globally recognised handloom traditions, including Sambalpuri, Bomkai, Kotpad, and Ikat weaving styles, which continue to play a crucial role in the state’s cultural and rural economy.
