Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are set for a major transition in household energy use, as authorities push for widespread adoption of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) under the City Gas Distribution network.
Ambitious Household Coverage
In Bhubaneswar, the target is to provide 1.25 lakh household connections, with around 19,000 homes already connected. Meanwhile, Cuttack has made steady progress, with nearly 9,000 households currently receiving PNG supply, and expansion ongoing across residential areas.
Convenience and Reliability
According to Soumya Ranjan Mohanty, Marketing Head at GAIL India Limited, the transition will significantly improve daily convenience for households.
PNG offers:
-
24×7 uninterrupted gas supply
-
No need for booking or waiting for LPG cylinders
-
Direct pipeline access, eliminating delivery delays
Cleaner and Safer Energy
Officials say the PNG network will also:
-
Enhance safety standards compared to LPG cylinders
-
Reduce carbon emissions
-
Support India’s broader clean energy goals
Urban Lifestyle Shift
The rollout marks a structural shift in how urban households consume cooking fuel, moving towards a more efficient and sustainable energy model.
For residents of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the PNG expansion represents not just improved convenience, but a long-term upgrade in urban living standards and environmental sustainability.
