Bhubaneswar: India is set to undertake its most advanced population survey with Census of India 2027, marking a major shift toward digital data collection and governance.
The Census is a comprehensive process involving the collection, compilation, analysis, and dissemination of demographic, social, cultural, and economic data relating to every individual in the country. The 2027 exercise will be the 16th Census in India’s history and the 8th since Independence, making it the largest enumeration exercise globally.
A key highlight of Census 2027 is its digital integration, which is expected to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and data security while reducing manual errors. The move also strengthens evidence-based policymaking by enabling faster processing and real-time insights.
The census will be conducted in two structured phases:
-
Phase I: Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) – This phase will capture data on housing conditions, amenities, and assets.
-
Phase II: Population Enumeration (PE) – This phase will record detailed demographic, social, and economic information of individuals.
With improved technology, streamlined processes, and robust safeguards, Census 2027 is expected to redefine how large-scale population data is collected and utilized in India, supporting more targeted and effective governance.
