Bhubaneswar: National Panchayati Raj Day underscores India’s commitment to decentralised governance through Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), which were constitutionally empowered by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act.
The amendment institutionalised a three-tier system of local governance, enabling elected bodies at the village, block, and district levels to play a direct role in planning and implementation of development programmes. Over the years, PRIs have evolved into key instruments for strengthening grassroots democracy.
Recent initiatives, including digital governance platforms, enhanced fiscal devolution, and capacity-building measures, have improved transparency and efficiency in service delivery. A notable feature has been the increasing participation of women, driven by reservation policies, which has contributed to more inclusive decision-making at the local level.
By empowering rural communities and promoting participatory governance, PRIs continue to play a central role in advancing balanced and inclusive development. The system aligns closely with the broader vision of self-reliant villages and sustainable rural transformation.
