Bhubaneswar: At the present time, about 69.5 percent of children studying in class 8 don’t know how to do subtraction and 48.8 percent of students are unable to do divisions as published in Annual Status of Education Report ( ASER). Moreover, one third of the students studying in class 5 are unable to read books from class four and one fifth children who are in 10 th grade cannot write their names correctly. If we analyze these aspects, there will be multiple questions that arise on the condition, process and system of education and teaching. Everybody including the teachers, parents, education department and the government are guilty of this.
A child begins education when he is a toddler. Every parent wants their child to perform well in studies. Teachers in school also try their best by giving practice lessons and homework for the students. Nobody can deny that the pressure on the students starts from this system of teaching in school, teachers, parents and the education system. The child doesn’t get little time to play or any leisurely activity. This occurs to the children who study in private schools mostly.
They have to sit for at least two major exams in a year, except for the monthly tests, quarterly tests, tuition tests and unit tests. The parents have to put in a lot of effort to make the child perform well and succeed in the exams. The exams are not common ones but are very competitive in nature. The student has to put in constant effort for it. This also puts a great amount of pressure on the child. Scoring the highest mark in the scholarship exams, securing A- grade in Matriculation Board, higher secondary, graduation, post graduation, and different entrance tests for professional courses, create a mountain of pressure on the students. The number of educational institutions and varieties of education India has not any other countries have. It is very difficult to select a particular course and an institution as per one’s choice. The parents go through a lot of struggle for it. For example, in the NEET exam if the student fails to secure a fair rank after trying hard then he/ she has to look for some other option. The parents and children who go through this struggle can only explain. It is an excessively consequential arrangement and situation in providing a child proper guidance for choosing a career path.
In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the program ‘ Parikha Pe Charchaa’ where he advised the students to treat exams as a festival. This program has been continuing for six years. Nobody knows how far it impacts the situation of the students till now. The New Education Policy currently in controversy has once again cone to discussion on having a system of stress free examinations. Many educationists and academicians have expressed their points on it in the media.
Media covers the statements of those students who secured the highest marks, perform very well in exams. Every student says he/ she studies for 8-10 hours a day. Those hours are not free from pressure or no exam is free from pressure. The children are usually playful and joyful in nature. Here, the advice and orders of the teachers and parents should not be considered as pressure rather than guidance. But the talent of the student is the important factor which should not be ignored.
It come to news every now and then about students suicide, especially in technical education fields like medical and engineering students. The educational institutions are more like business hubs. Students suicide has become a matter of great concern on which the supreme court has also shown attention to. There should be an appropriate environment for a proper education system, teaching and learning so that the students feel a safe, secure and stress free atmosphere.
